![]() ![]() Unlike those gods of old, however, we celebrate that virtue and have made it our mission to reward the musically curious among us with a never-ending experience of music discovery.”Ī Music Genome Project In-Store Kiosk SEE ALSO: Why is it called Spotify? “She was also, as we all know, very curious. In ancient Greek mythology, Pandora received many gifts from the gods, including the gift of music, from Apollo,” the about page reads. ![]() “The name Pandora means ‘all gifted’ in Greek. ![]() In an ambitious attempt to codify his approach to making music, he created Savage Beast Technologies in 2000.Īfter ten months, this endeavor gave life to the Music Genome Project, which aimed to complete “the most comprehensive analysis of music ever undertaken.” Although the technology was originally distributed in store kiosks designed to give music-lovers insight into what albums would be worth adding to their collections, it eventually set the foundation for Pandora. Film after film, the specific taste of each director led him to a more methodical practice of composition. To help pay the bills, he took up work as a musical composer for films. The idea actually began in the early 90’s, just as the internet was beginning to boom, when Tim was struggling as a self-employed musician. The company is currently led by CEO Brian McAndrews, with more than 1,300 employees and upwards of 250 million users. After the company’s initial plan for third-party licensing with brands like AOL and Best Buy nearly left the idea in the dust, Pandora Media relied on private investments from angel investors and venture capitalists before going public in 2011 – more than ten years after Westergren first dreamt of readily accessible radio. Ultimately it took much more than maxed out credit cards for the radio app to succeed. Headquartered in Oakland California, it took two years of work before their breakthrough: Pandora was featured as one of the first listings in the iPhone app store. Westergren, along with Will Glaser and Jon Kraft, founded Pandora Radio in September 2005 with the sole purpose of providing personalized radio to internet users. Anyone who has ever had a goal knows they don’t always come easily, and maybe nobody knows that better than Tim Westergren. I am still baffled how Pandora maintains such a high review factor! Yowsers! Is it because I am not a premium user? Well, if that is the case, that policy won't win me over to pay again. If you haven’t tried to accomplish something more than 340 times while maxing out 11 credit cards, it’s possible you haven’t tried hard enough. It is more frustrating than entertaining, for me. I don't know about everyone else, but I am through with Pandora. I have had this issue with many other genres as Pandora crosses the line for suggestions, offering music that were not even close to the stations I selected. I previously was a paying listener but Google screwed up my subscription parms for many apps and I have not taken the time to upgrade again to Pandora, directly. I heard Oriental, punk, industrial, rock - everything else but what my search requested. I heard some bluegrass, but there is more to banjo than just bluegrass. After aproximately twenty attempts (no, I am not exaggerating), I could not find one "banjo, instrumental" station that played traditional banjo music. I am pretty much an eclectic listener and today I opted for some banjo music. I have used Pandora for several years and am very disappointed in the current status. I'm not sure how Pandora got such a high rating, to be blunt. I chose one star because I had to enter something.
